Cardenxe Sotol, at the intersection of art and music, is a terroir-inspired artisanal spirit distilled from the heart of the Dasylirion plant, in North of Mexico - where it holds a Denomination of Origin. Every label (Desierto, Pradera and Sierra) honors a different environment in which the plants used to distill grow.
Different smells & flavors, methods, cultures and climates influence the sotol, and as such we aim to explore the unique profiles of each region.
Upon the first sip it tickles the tongue and gently fills our taste buds with flavor. It suddenly starts to sink deep inside with its warm, soothing feeling, leaving behind the uniquely smooth herbal taste of sotol and lingering at the far end of our palate.
Its high: a triumphant happiness and sense of ease that compels us to share deeper feelings and connect with one another.
It all started with three friends, on a journey to discover the near-extinct Canto Cardenche, a musical genre endemic to Northern Mexico.
The central themes of the songs are love and sorrow, which is why it lends the name from the cactus cardenche. The songs are not based on a story, rather they describe deep emotions - deep as the cardenche spine pinned into the skin. Listening to the cardencheros practice their art, while sipping cups of sotol – the local drink of choice - we found inspiration.
We believe that it can inspire deep emotions in those who feel the call to drink it, as it does for us… Which is why we say that Cardenxe is the Catalyst of relationships that are deep
protected by its very own Denomination of Origin.
While having been produced in Mexico for hundreds of years, it became popular in the USA during prohibition, when Al Capone started smuggling it in across the border together with whiskey.
When his operation got caught, authorities started cracking down on Sotol distillers, some of whom carried on their practice in secrecy until the mid-90s, when Sotol commerce was finally legalized.
Sotol is now experiencing a renaissance as the new Mexican spirit, with people around the world constantly seeking new specialties that the incredibly diverse and rich Mexican culture has to offer.
With mere gusts of wind, the quiotes gently oscillate, graciously gifting the land around them with seeds which will turn into new Dasylirion plants.
Interestingly enough, and differently from Agave plants, the growth of the quiote does not result in the death of these sweet Sotol plants, rather the beginning of a new life cycle. Eventually, a new plant shall arise from the bottom of the quiote, on top of the old Dasylirion.
There, the cycle begins – a troubled livelihood in the most extreme of weathers; below freezing temperatures in the winter and dry high heat in the summer, which the Dasylirion endures for over a decade.
Between the 12th and 15th years of growth, it’s time to harvest. Typically, Sotol plants grow in ranches and pose a danger to the multitude of animals pasturing in them, as they could get injured in the process of grazing and moving around these palmillas. Therefore, the harvesting of Sotol is an essential part of the Mexican agricultural chain.
The Dasylirion is hand cut with a machete to extract the piña (the heart of the plant), which is then mounted on donkeys and transported to the distillery-bound trucks.
The piñas have always been cooked in underground conical ovens, since the very beginning of Sotol distillation hundreds of years ago.
The fire is started with what the local land has always offered – ancient desert and mountain rocks, and wood from the large surrounding nut tree fields.
After the piñas are cooked for 24 hours, it’s time to crush them for extraction of the juices.
Cardenxe sotol extraction takes place with an ax. This is what works best to ensure that all the juices and aromas of our selected Dasylirion varieties are passed on to the fermentation.
“This is where the real alchemy occurs. This, is where we impart the aromas and flavors”, claims the Master Distiller. It is his firm belief that fermentation is the most important part of the process, which took him years to master.
Our Sotol is naturally fermented in pine wood tubs and monitored for 4 to 7 days - the Master Distiller’s secret touch.
When creating the Cardenxe formula, according to the founders’ dream, the distillation process is that which took the longest to develop.
Indeed, we went through lots of trial runs over several months, until we reached the optimal technique. That is why, for example, Cardenxe Sotol De Desierto is purposefully double distilled in copper stills.
Each batch of Cardenxe is blended accordingly and taste-tested to ensure its faithfulness to the intended flavor and ABV level.
We want to spread our story and our message and inspire humans around the world. We are not just looking to create a brand; rather the community of Sotol drinkers: the group of trendsetters that will bring the spirit around the world… For this reason we have placed great emphasis on crafting our unique production process, giving the bottle a transcedental look and sharing a story that goes beyond just the liquid.
Our EssenceThe heart of sotol beats prominently in its harvest, in its land and its voices. The essence of Cardenxe is to celebrate love for life in this world, which links it to the arts that allow us to set the context of our lives. Just like art, Cardenxe sinks deeply into our souls. Our concept inspiration came from music. Our bottle design is inspired by Mexican avant-garde art movement Estridentismo, because of it’s ‘break-the-mold’ spirit that reminds us of our mission with Cardenxe Sotol.
In essence, Estridentismo seeks to “start an aesthetic revolution against the standardization of imagination” - immerse in the story that our bottle tells, and let your imagination roam on. All our bottle designs include two recurring elements: the cardenche cactus with its 'spine of love', and the three cardencheros expressing their deep emotions through evocative songs of love and sorrow.
A desertic shrub belonging to the Asparagaceae family, that grows in the northern Mexican regions of Chihuahua, Durango and Coahuila.
It is not the agave which is used to distill Tequila and Mezcal, and besides the looks, Dasylirion is very different from its distant cactus cousin in its life cycle, the way its piñas collect sugars and translate into liquid – honoring the true taste of the plant with intriguing Vegetal & Floral notes.
a lot of its flavor comes from the different experiences, such as droughts, floods and other natural events, that the plant goes through during its 10-15 year life span.
Sotol thrives in harsh conditions, growing wild between 3,000 and 6,500 feet elevation, often enduring below-freezing temperatures in the winter and wildfires in the summer. Three environments impart the distilled very different characteristics: Forest/Sierra, Desert and Prairie. Each of them with its own unique twist on the characteristic earthy and herbal profile of sotol.
In the dry desert, the Dasylirion plants have concentrated sugars, making them favorable for sotol production. The tasting notes are generally more earthy and mineral, whereas, for example, the moist soil of the forest gives the ‘Sotol de la Sierra’ notes of eucalyptus, pine, and moss. Exactly because of its unicity, Sotol has become a PDO product, protected by a regulatory council which establishes standards of quality and production.
DESIERTO Chihuahua, Mexico
Affectionately called the “Lady of the desert”, its name is derived from the Tarahumara language meaning “between two waters” or “dry and sandy place.”
Sierra Madre Occidental
Meaning, “mother mountain range of the west” is a system of mountains that run through the western coast of Mexico, starting in Chihuahua. The mountain range is divided by large canyons formed by 6 rivers that run through it - providing the surrounding lands with water for irrigation.
Durango’s borders create a heart-like shape, lending its land to the poisonous scorpion and voicing the sounds of love and sorrow - the beautiful Canto Cardenche
In the Sierra Madre Occidental of Chihuahua lies the rustic outpost of Madera: an ancient mining town. In Madera, Sotol has been distilled for centuries following a specific methodology and using a blend of their local grown plants of Sotol 'Sereque' and Agave 'Churique'. The flavor is herbal in a quasi-floral way, imparted by the musky terroir of the lush mountain forest. For this variety, Cardenxe champions tradition, following the ancient production methods with a slight twist: our Sotol de La Sierra is distilled from 100% Sotol.
The result: a sublime explosion on the palate, and a unique potential for an eccentric cocktail recipe.
Subtle floral notes of eucalyptus, moss & nuts fill the palate, transforming into a vigorous grassy aftertaste that evokes the high altitude forests where the sotol plants grow. A unique flavor that is quite hard to unravel… although the local producers would say “esto es puro Sotol!”
SHOP ONLINEIn the arid municipality of Ciudad Aldama, the Master Distiller of Cardenxe came up with a unique formula to distill Sotol which is true to its terroir, but also distinguished from all other Sotols. A blend of three varieties of Dasylirion grown in the desert. After several long experimentations, the 'Sotol De Desierto' came into being.
Characterized by a juxtaposition of sweet and mineral notes, the Sotol De Desierto is tamed by its light lingering vegetal aftertaste – a true celebration of the Sotol plant. We can feel the earth and wood on the tongue, while savoring notes of prickly pear and cocoa on the palate.
SHOP ONLINENestled in the high prairie of Nombre De Dios, in Durango, lies an ancient distillery. With the new generation in charge, the brothers gave it their modern twist - fine tuning a solar powered system which fuels the entire operation. Still true to its original way of distilling, the process is completely artisanal, with double distillation in copper alambics.
The Pradera's terroir seeps into this spirit very distinctively, imparting notes of hay, leather and a lingering taste of burnt corn.
SHOP ONLINEWe produce a 'friendlier' spirit, charchterized by unparalleled smoothness within the high proof liquor world. Smooth by nature, because Sotol is not too complex and lacks in heavy smoky notes, while also not being acohol forward in taste. The 'friendly' flavor also reflects the essence of the brand, which is to push us all to create deep connections with one another and the world around us.
To tap into the Sotol category, with such a focus on transmitting a message, we decided to create a unique bottle look, which is elegantly attractive while showing our story and source of inspiration. Our hope is that one will be attracted to learn more about what Sotol is, and transcend our message, while enjoying the sipping experience.
ManifestoWith Cardenxe we are not just pushing a brand; we are starting a trend, together with our community. The only way to establish a future for Sotol is to come together and create a love story that goes deep, solidifying a group of loyal sotol drinkers that is evergrowing.
Our eclectic and eccentric community around the world (including you, who are reading this) will set the trend for Sotol and feel inspired with confidence to write their own story.
CommunityOur Sotol is very versatile. Thanks to its smoothness it can be sipped to experience all its aromas in their fullest. However it is also a deliciously magnificent ingredient for cocktails. The simple and balanced herbal flavors make sotol a great blend with sweet and fruity cocktails. We have also been experimenting lots of recipes, with Cardenxe and other herbal regional liqueurs from around the world as co-protagonists in the cocktail and have reached mouth-watering results.

During our journey, we realize what the purpose of life is: to fall in love, with all the beauty in this world.
At this very moment we find ourselves in an oasis, a river slicing through it leaving the desert on one side and unleashing the lush nature of the sierra on the other - a beautiful mystical place.
In the middle is us, and the cardenche: cactus of love that inspired stirring songs of love and sorrow. Songs that light up the darkness of the night when all else fails, and open eyes to recognize the voice that sings them.
The cardenche is calling; you want to feel it. Upon touch, you’ll get spined, and it settles in deep, becoming difficult to take out… Much like love.
As the songs describe, it’s easy to fall in love, but how about falling out of love?
